After 75 years it is almost impossible to find a G518 trailer ‘barn find’ that is unmolested. The majority that went to Europe saw service with the armies of our post-ww2 allies and were rebuilt, reconfigured and modified to suit their needs. The trailers that did return to the US either after the war or decades later were often used as farm trailers or in road construction.
But once in a while a trailer come to light that is truly a time capsule. Hans Loix owns one such example. This 1943 Gerstenslager was transferred to the French Army where the only modifications before being surplused was paint and a spare tire carrier. After that it went into a private museum where eventually Hans purchased it.
Original Details
As you look over the pictures note some of the original features often missing from restored trailers. The tarpaulin tie down rings are complete loops, not cut. The black out switch does not have the threaded fitting for attachment to the G529 (Jeep) trailers. The gasket between the black out switch and the body of the trailer. The King Bee Fotoray marble reflectors. The bolts for the reflectors and light brackets are configured with the round head on the inside of the body and the nuts on the outside. And also the clip for the inter vehicle connector located on the top of the drawbar casting.
